Topic being defined

Three-product thesis format · Strategy and Organization research line

The thesis brings together three distinct products connected by a single subject. Because it is part of the dual degree with UBI, the work answers to two sets of rules that add up: Fucape's institutional model and the requirements of the Cotutelle Agreement.

Research lines

Strategy and Organization

Strategic innovation, organizational ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities in firms.

Corporate Governance in family firms

Ownership and control structures, governance mechanisms — board, management and audit committees — and the tensions specific to the family firm: succession, family influence and performance.

Thesis model

The rules come from two different sources that add up rather than replace one another.

Fucape model

Doctoral Guide 2025/2, ch. 12

Three distinct products, connected to one another by a single subject.

  • Technological Article

A manuscript addressing a practical institutional problem, proposing a solution aimed at managers, firms or government — not at the academic literature.

  • Scientific Article

Work emphasizing the understanding of phenomena, designed according to rigorous scientific criteria and generally intended for journals.

  • Technological Product

A tangible object of high novelty: an innovative organization, social technology, software, a technical-scientific database or a regulatory standard. It may be replaced by a second Scientific Article.

UBI dual degree

Cotutelle Agreement · additional requirements

These add to the Fucape model and replace none of its parts.

  • At least three scientific articles

Fucape's standard model formally yields only one scientific article within the thesis — the other two must come from outside the three-product structure.

  • One in an ISI/Scopus journal

    With an impact factor ≥ 1.6 or an H-index ≥ 30.

  • One at an international conference

At least one of the articles presented at an international event.

  • Defense and committee

The defense is held in Portuguese or English, with at least two external members on the examining committee.

To qualify
Two of the three parts complete and the third in project form. If primary data is involved, the sections up to the methodology must approach the quality required at the defense. Before the qualifying exam, at least one scientific or technical article must have been published or presented — only output and events from the start of classes, in June 2026, are counted.
To defend
All three parts complete, regardless of the order in which they were finished.
